The Way I See It # 551: Blog of Note

Okay, okay, this blog is not one of Blogger's Blogs of Note, BUT on May 1st it was a relevant blog that had the honor of receiving such a title!

Skulladay.blogspot.com documents/ed the musings of Noah Scalin, an artist who one day decided to make a skull a day for an entire year. That year has come and gone and blog posts daily renditions of fan art related to skulls and to Noah Scalin's art.

I thought this was really cool. What was even cooler was when I found out, through the blog, that some of his 365 Skulls will be in a show right here in Richmond from July 3-August 22 at Quirk Gallery (311 W. Broad St.) Imagine my excitement when I found out that he not only is based in Richmond, but also developed a class on socially conscious design for Virginia Commonwealth University!

you can read more about Noah Scalin here, and visit his blog here.

The Way I See It # 464

I had to sign a blogging agreement with Barnes and Nobel saying that I would put a notice on this blog to say that all of my ideas are my own and not the ideas of my employer. Harrumpf.

Work was good. I'm not scheduled today, ugh, but other than that it's okay. Apparently it's going to be insane next week and I'm going to be answer a lot of questions I don't know.

Thankfully Sarah and Michele were in town last night, so we went to Three Monkeys with some of Michele's friends and it was fun. Then we went to hang out with Michele's boyfriend, Andrew, to play Catch Phrase with his friends. Overall a good night.

Today I might be seeing an apartment. I hope it's nice...

The Way I See It # 437

I've spent 10+ hours in the library. I have been here all day and I'm so tired! At least I got everything done, which is what I wanted to do.

Tomorrow I have the study session, then I turn in my Linguistics Assessment.
I'm headed back to Northern VA on Saturday, where I will fall out of the car and kiss the ground.

Can you tell I'm sick of school?

When I get back I plan on doing these things:
1. Going out to dinner with my mom!
2. Going on a Fashion Odyssey
3. Working
4. Doing absolutely nothing
5. Blogging
6. put cute outfits together for winter
7. MORE

In response to Frozenvision's video.... I may be cynical, but I think the tears on that kid were due to his inability to blink.

Am I too cynical?

The Way I See It # 433

I've been staring at this blog entry page for a while. I'm going to have to agree with Misha about limiting what we write on our blogs due to their personal nature. However, I can't help but wonder how freeing it would be if I was a complete open book. Would I feel better? Would I be embarrassed? Would I be judged? Yes, yes, yes. I told my friend John once that I have another private blog just for personal stuff, and he couldn't understand why I just didn't use a word document for it. I guess I sometimes feel like it's easier to throw out my emotions and feelings to anonymous strangers than I do to people I know personally. Because I hate having my feelings to myself. I don't like the fact that there is no one I can really talk to here at VCU who will just listen without judgment. Wait.... I take that back. Everyone can judge, rather, everyone feels they need to put their two cents in. I just want a sponge. I want someone who I can relay all of my feelings, frustrations, fears, and short comings to, and they won't have the immediate solution for me. I'm not looking for a solution, I'm looking for an ear.

Also, I'm incredibly afraid of gossip. It's when people step beyond putting their two cents in, and decide to tell everyone else what they think about someone else's situation.

all this talk makes me feel very lonely.....

The Way I See It # 428

I wish that I had a craft that I was really good at so that I could blog about it. A lot of people scoff when they tell me that they despise the idea of "personal" blogs, and that they much prefer blogs about a certain subject, whether it be fashion, politics, comic books, cooking, knitting, whatever.
I would say that I agree. When it comes to the types of blogs that I read, I'm far more interested in topics about things I'm unfamiliar with, or am obsessed with, rather than reading about someone's personal life. Not that I don't like reading personal blogs; I love them. But I would say a majority of the new blogs I start reading are about a certain subject unrelated to the personal life of the author.

On that note, thank you for reading!

While I do have a blog about fashion and design in general, it's unlike most other fashion blogs I've become a fan of. Mostly because the fashion blogs I read include pictures of the authors, and they clothes they have. I for one, have no money to spend on clothing, and have used this as an excuse not to look cute and fashionable in my day-to-day. This will simply have to change. I can't hide behind a monetary excuse for the way I look when it's fairly easy to look stylish on the dime. So I will be putting my outfits together and taking pictures. I think that this will also help with me finding out exactly what my style is, because, really, I have no idea what it is at this point. If you'd like to see the pictures, or if you're unaware of my fashion (ish) blog, don't hesitate to visit here.

Just a quick update, I've added a language translator to the page. I've decided that it might be beneficial for my French if I have my blog translated into it so I can read aloud and feel proficient. If you happen to speak another language (or several) you can get practice AND keep up with my life. (I've also added it to Interior Motive). You can thank me when we carry on a conversation in french. :)

Speaking of readers, I've noticed some new readers (because I'm creepy and sitemeter allows me to do this). Welcome!

Shifting gears, I've been at the library all night studying for my Physics exam next week. I decided to get some Starbucks. By the way, I find it appalling that there are no late-night coffee shops except for the Village and 3rd Street Diner (a long ass walk). At any rate, I was standing in line, and a guy behind me told the barista his order. He said,
"Yeah, I'll have a coffee....erm... the largest size you have.... and also... another largest size... and... do you guys do iced coffee?"
The barista took his order, and I turned to him,
Me: "It's called a Venti"
Him: "What?"
Me: "The largest size, it's a 'Venti'"
Him: "Oh, thank you!"
Me: "Have you never been to a Starbucks before?"
Him: "ermm... no."
Me: "Wow! Rare breed!"
Him: "Yeah, well I'm cramming, so....and it's my parents money... they can afford it...."
Me: "Well, then why not?"

It was refreshing to see someone who had never been to a Starbucks. It made my day, actually.

The Way I See It #423

I'm trying out a new look. I'm not sure if I'm sold on it. I do like the smashed coffee, though. It reminds me of the dreams I often have about food.... or whatever.

Am I weird?

I may find this too dark tomorrow.

I'm decorating the house for Christmas with my family tomorrow! I'm excited! We normally don't decorate this early, but we're never home, so it makes sense. :)

The Way I See It # 355

The Way I See It # 343

I'm not going to update on how I'm doing. I will say, however, that I'm doing ok, and that's all I'll say.

Yesterday I spent the day with my mom and we went to short pump. It was nice, and the weather was gorgeous. I'm glad she came down, I really miss her. Hopefully I'll be able to visit christina within the next month or so because she really wants me to visit the Burg. I'm excited to meet her friends and see the Russian House where she's living. Does VCU have language dorms? That would be sweet.

After Mom left I caught up with Sara and we watch the trainwreck that was the VMAs (What the fuck was that?) After that I came home and talked to Abby on the phone until almost 2 in the morning. I really miss her. I'm glad we could talk, but we got disconected at the end. I did all of my homework, and then I made a new blog.

http://interior-motive.blogspot.com

it's a blog for me to post pictures of the things I love. I dont think guys will like it, but it's mostly for myself and another way to keep busy.

I have French today, Physics, and Linguistics. I have to finish my readings before linguistics.
I have to get ready for the day!

The Way I See It # 332

I'm back in the library, and it feels so nostalgic, I have to admit. Like the blogger I am, I have Starbucks in hand, and am feeling thoughtful. If I can remember, there was always something about Cabell that made me feel insightful, studious, and even a bit inventive. Maybe that's the academic that I know I am.... maybe I just belong in an institution such as this. I just got out of my Linguistics class, and ducked out of the rain for a bit before my Urban Planning course at 7:00. For linguistics homework I had a reading about the sexual bias in language- importantly on Neutral pronouns that aren't. it discussed the common usage of "he", "his", and "man" as neutral pronouns, used to indicate a neutral party. By using these words people are more likely to think of men, rather than women, and it is a sexual bias to use such pronouns instead of ones that are actually nuetral, such as "s/he", "he or she", and "they". I really enjoyed reading the article, but when I got to class today I was disappointed by the class discussion. People either seemed to relish coming off as "intellectual" by second guessing our professor's points, or they sat confused and contested whether or not his points were really making sense to anyone. Well, they were! I got everything fine, and so did a few people, but the ones who spoke the most only made our professor confused, and he appeared to be a complete push over. The class discussion quickly was out of his hands and there were so many tangents, even I couldn't keep up. I hope our next discussion isn't anything like that, I was so frustrated.

I went down to the Commonwealth Times to see if I could nab a spot as a staff writer. Turns out they never got my application, and they aren't hiring at the moment because they don't know their budget. Anyway, the Opinion editor said that I could send in articles that I write, but that she couldn't guarantee that they would run. The only requirement for the articles that I send in is that it has to be factual, and I just can't make up things to write about. It wasn't the visit I was hoping for. I hoping to have an interview with the editor in chief, talk about my experience as a writer, tell him what I was hoping to write about, and see where it went from there. Now all I can do is hope I can catch "Greg" who runs the whole place and see if he will hire me onto the staff, or send in opinion articles and see if they get published.

maybe one thing I would really like to do would be to write a blog about VCU. Maybe not just about me personally, but where people go, post pictures of parties, review restaurants close by, do articles about student activities, the Art community.

There was always that possibility for a "sister-blog" at VCU for the blog my sister Christina wants to start up.... I wonder if she's done anything with that...

I'm thinking about getting a sandwich from Starbucks, as I don't want to go to Shafer because of the rain. That's kind of silly, but Starbucks sandwiches are actually kind of tasty. By the time I get out of Urban Planning it wil be 10, and all I'm going to want to do is go home and do my paper about scientists and such for physics..... which, actually, i could be doing now.

I guess I'll get to it then....
